Members of the Masque and Whig Club elected the following officers for the 1962-1963 school year:
LUCILLE SHARER President
PAUL GENSAMER Vice-President
RICKY HOLES Secretary-Treasurer
The club presented two plays throughout the year. These were “Tomorrow’s A Lovely Day” by James Stone and “What’s Cookin’?” by Helen Louise Miller. The first was the annual senior play while the latter was an assembly program.
“Tomorrow’s A Lovely Day” proved to be a great success to the club. Following the play, the cast went to Taylor’s Restaurant for a celebration of their success. The party then drifted to Holiday Bowl where it broke up.
The other play, “What’s Cookin’?” was presented on March 22, 1963, at an assembly program.
As the curtain rose, Mrs. Morgen (Cheryl Shope), Mrs. Vane (Betty Yetter), and Mrs. Hale (Kathie Gearhart) , judges for the Meatless Menu Contest, sponsored by the P.T.A. of Hildabrand High, were tasting Peanutburgers au Gratin. They were being served by Jo Arm- strong (Jean Pelter) and Nancy Hastings (Lucille Sharer). It seems that Jo had sent her brother’s recipe to the Meatless Menu Contest without his consent. Frank Armstrong (Jim Bonsell) didn’t like his friends to know that he could cook. Entry number 25, which was Yankee Doodle Goulash, Frank’s recipe, won the contest. When Jo told him that he had won the prize for the Meatless Menu Contest, he was very angry with her. There he was, Frank Arm- strong, captain of the Hildabrand Tigers, a cook at heart. Nancy had a plan to dress Frank up as a girl so that he could save his dignity and receive the prize. Since Jo had written Francis on the form, and Francis can also be a girl’s name, ‘this was perfectly legal. Nancy and his best friend, Ted (Gene Shauf), changed Frank into a girl.
Dr. Andrews (Ralph Varner), principal of Hildabrand High, introduced Coach Murdock (Art Putt) who gave the girls a talk reminding them that the road to a man’s heart lies through his stomach. The photographer (Paul Gensamer) came into take the picture of the winner and the judges. As he was about ready to take the picture, Mrs. Morgen decided the little star ought to have a chance to fix her hair. She took the scarf off Frank’s head and thus disclosed his haircut and identity. Poor Frank then had to explain how his recipe was entered in the Meatless Menu Contest. Nancy, ]o, and Ted came to his rescue and explained the whole ordeal to the judges and Dr. Andrews.
There wasn’t anything in the contest rules about a boy not being allowed to enter, so Frank or Francis was allowed to keep the prize. As he left the stage to change from his female finery to his regular clothes, the cast sang Yankee Doodle, the new version made up for Yankee Doodle Goulash, Frank returned and the photographer took his picture. The curtain closed as the cast gave three cheers for Frank Armstrong and his Yankee Doodle Goulash.
