A few of the pics I took of the pelicans we saw on the way to Dauphin Island from Fort Morgan, AL across Mobile Bay.
The brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is an interesting and photogenic bird. The
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Brown_Pelican/lifehistory site describes them as "a comically elegant bird with an over-sized bill, sinuous neck, and big, dark body." It's hard to imagine that they were well on the road to extinction in the 06's and 70's due to the common use of the pesticide DDT. What a shame it would have been had they been wiped out. Awkward on land, at home in water, elegant and graceful in the air… what fascinating creatures they are. It's a privilege to photograph them.
